Community Forums

Community Forums are built on the idea there is an engaged public, who frames the issues, deliberates, develops shared directions, and acts together to make an impact. The West Virginia Center for Civic Life, with support from National Issues Forums Institute and the Kettering Foundation, developed a partnership with the West Virginia Prevention Resource Center to address the problem of underage alcohol use.

Through the framing process, prevention specialists gained information from nearly 400 WV citizens (including, but not limited to, youth, parents, school officials, government officials, police officers, church officials, bar owners, and retail sales clerks). With this information a community discussion guide was developed, along with a post-forum survey. Several communities in WV have participated in the process.

The Underage Drinking Prevention and Social Marketing Project at the West Virginia Prevention Resource Center is federally funded though grants from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment Block Grant administered through the WV Division on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention?s  Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Grant Program, and the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, both administered through WV Division of Criminal Justice Services, and by funds from the Governor's Highway Safety Program.
